A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Market Movement in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month surged in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A particular user, which registered on the site last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

Yet the odds had increased to 11% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other traders also made significant sums from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Politicians are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on Monday would prevent public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from sports to politics.

The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting industry.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
