Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
