The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
