The Princess of Wales's Annual Yuletide Service of Carols Honours Community Volunteers
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with guests including dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have supported their local areas.
The 1,600 guests will listen to a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
A Theme of Kindness and Compassion
The central message of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.
Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose daughter died of a tumour, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.
"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an profound impact to the lives of others," the Princess expressed in a message before the festive gathering.
Carefully Paced Reappearance
The princess has been making her own measured re-emergence to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her initial major address in two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".
Musical Talent and Access
Attendees entering the Abbey will enjoy performances from budding artists aided by the Future Talent charity, set up with the help of the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for music lessons.
An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who plays the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been assisted by the charity, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "amazing" to be performing at the evening's event.
"Music can be very expensive," the musician remarked. She is now enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.
A Family Affair
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.
Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.
That will encompass young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a young hero award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to generate funds for local food charities.
Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment
The Abbey has been decorated with handcrafted festive wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
The musical lineup includes singer Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a Cornish sea shanty group, Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the perfect culmination."
The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
