Uche Ignites Straightforward Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their maiden continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Without star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually secures them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure direct entry to the last 16, particularly after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This occasion offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season proved outmatched even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg problems.
Control Established from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
