The Journey of a Movement tends to be characterized by specific steps.

1. The Core Concept

A dominant personality or leaders present an innovative concept offering a cure for disconnected individuals.

And so it goes. Preparations are underway to confront the system overseas. The gunships are circling. Smoke is rising from the sidelines. One individual, exposed, anxious, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET displayed prominently as a symbol, has stumbled into view and is being led away in secrecy for a temporary assignment elsewhere.

Do you recall the start, when optimism reigned? The days of Bazball 1.0, of uninhibited aggression.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Movement founders promise a reboot, optimism ahead, love, success among a group who all believe in the method.

What did it represent back then? Players celebrating basking in glory. Ink. Strength. Jawlines. Elite male wellness energy. Of course, The squad often say Bazball doesn’t actually exist, which is funny because if it doesn’t exist, what did we see?

Yet it’s clear its essence. It’s the player attempting a move so outrageous it’s beyond belief. It’s the adrenaline of Ben Stokes at his peak, a demeanor suggesting: pensive Nordic god, beard made of wood, natural look, genuinely raw you half-expect to notice and notice he’s fielding at mid-off bare-chested embracing nature.

It’s the batsman often seen to talk in press conferences, out there looking like a cheerful animal smartly dressed, expressing thoughts like we’re breaking down traditions. And yes, the atmosphere, for quite a long time, was uplifting.

3. A New Life

Growth phase. Togetherness strengthened through repetition of key phrases. These principles are often illogical as a test of “true belief”.

Does anyone else feel? The reaction, the outrage, the disappointment after the first Ashes Test defeat seems too strong, too much. The performance was poor on the field, as is typical there. The consensus is that England don’t just need to lose, they need to lose righteously, to be cleansed, obliterated, overwhelmed via traditional methods of the bowler’s action, the conventional tactics of the bowler, marking his wickets humbly as if receiving a pleasant gift. What impact will this have?

4. Hate Bonding

Problems arise from failures in the plan. But the cult cannot admit errors. It turns to hostility externally.

In truth, approaching the upcoming game, we’ve entered an intriguing moment in the journey of this thing. They might succeed in the next Test in a blur of adrenal disruption. Alternatively, failure may follow. And if they do lose it seems we really might be entering the decline.

Before that happens, there are two things worth saying about this. In the past, at the start, of passion and hope, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. Criticism followed, which proved the point as it’s known the best way of proving that it’s not a closed group is when its acolytes respond with anger denying scrutiny of the philosophy.

What has happened recently are equally notable. Criticism of the approach is now the trend. Social media is furious, disappointed commentators, images of frustrated travelling fans cheated out of three days of cricket, similar to timeshare owners seeking justice.

On the other hand, there is the broader context of the host’s complex deep-seated frustration with the aggressive tourists, out there saying, hey, that thing you love and have developed as part of your identity from others, well, it’s all a bit of a gag after all.

Here lies the truth. Everything is a cult. The approach was a phenomenon as the game has its own culture. Or at least, the sport in England is closed, a clique, a garden party, a restricted environment with a long history of ceremonial past defining it. This has always been where entry is limited. It’s the imperial sport of England, the pioneering brand. And notably, the country is a phenomenon, a series of esoteric hierarchies, a monarchy still exists.

The players have been sealed up in this system for years. In trying to escape from it, to build a better atmosphere, they are simply replicating their own experience, building another enclosure, a closed circle, but doing it this time with a new team and a coach encouraging individuality as long as yourself is quite a lot like myself.

Stay present. Embrace challenges. But no matter how fast and far you run, you remain stuck.
